"I love this book!" - Sue Grafton Read more “Reminds me why I fell in love with the genre.”-Laura Lippman “The hard-living, wisecracking titular detective bounces around post-Katrina New Orleans trying to track down a missing prosecutor in this auspicious debut of a new mystery series-and the Big Easy is every bit her equal in sass and flavor.”- Elle When a respected DA goes missing she returns to the hurricane-ravaged city to find out why. Claire also has deep roots in New Orleans, where she was mentored by Silette’s student the brilliant Constance Darling-until Darling was murdered. A one-time teen detective in Brooklyn, she is a follower of the esoteric French detective Jacques Silette, whose mysterious handbook Détection inspired Claire’s unusual practices. This knock-out start to a bracingly original new series features Claire DeWitt, the world’s greatest PI-at least, that's what she calls herself. DeWitt’s mesmerizing character and memorable voice take your breath away.”- New Orleans Times-Picayune “What would you get if that punkish dragon girl Lisbeth Salander met up with Jim Sallis’s Lew Griffin walking the back streets of New Orleans? Or Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone transformed herself into a tattooed magnolia driving a 4x4? Clare DeWitt, that’s what you’d get. as if David Lynch directed a Raymond Chandler novel.”-CNN

Warren was encouraged to release a 68 page bi-monthly comic entitled Creepy, drawn by many of the original artists from EC comics. The response to the comics was phenomenal. Warren had tested the waters by running comic strips in the pages of Famous Monsters of Filmland, the now legendary magazine that Forrest J Ackerman edited for him. Warren’s stroke of genius was repackaging horror comics as black and white magazines, in much the same way that Bill Gaines had done with Mad Magazine back in the late 50s, thereby ensuring the survival of EC Comics. Then, in 1965, Hugh Heffner wannabe – Jim Warren pulled the stake out of their undead hearts and horror comics rose from the grave once again. They’d been outlawed by the British government, and driven out of business in the US by the Comics Code authority. To begin, I’d like to set the background with a little bit of horror comic history, forgive me if you know most of this already.įrom the mid fifties, to the mid sixties horror comics were deader than a horny teen in Camp Crystal Lake. This time around I want to focus, not just on an artist, but a whole line of black and white horror comics from the 1970s, known to the horror comic cognoscenti as the Skywald Horror Mood. It’s been a while since I did a ‘Who the Fuck Is…? feature in this column, focussing on writers and comic artists who aren’t anywhere near as celebrated as they should be. This guide is on both Alpha & Omega series and the Mercy Thompson series, which are set in the same world and have a lot of crossover. In these series Briggs manages to mix the right quantity of magic, the paranormal, action and romance to create a world that keeps you hooked. When we think about the best of Urban Fantasy, it is hard NOT to think of Patricia Briggs and her Mercy Thompson and Alpha & Omega series. This is Mercy Thompson and Anna Latham’s reality, both women, strong in their own ways, face situations that have wider repercussions not just on their own lives but those of the supernatural and mundane world as well. And now, because of the invention of new technologies they are starting to come out to humans. Fae, vampires and werewolves, as well as other critters, have been hiding within the population for years. There are more than just humans in the world. Fungi are nature’s premiere destroyers and creators, digesting the world’s dead and leaving behind new soil. They are often microscopic and reside mostly out of sight-mainly underground-but as Merlin Sheldrake writes in Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds and Shape Our Futures, they support and sustain nearly all living systems. And everywhere there are probing fungi.įungi are classified as their own kingdom, separate from plants and animals. Plant roots plunge and swerve like superhighways with an infinite number of on-ramps. Their best guess is that there are as many as one billion microbes in a single teaspoon of soil. The same applies, though we rarely think of it: the dirt beneath you, whether a mile or a foot deep, is teeming with more organisms than researchers can quantify. Now imagine lying in a field, or on the forest floor. You have some sense of its vast, unknowable depths-worlds of life are surely darting about beneath you. Imagine that you are afloat on your back in the sea. Three years later he returned to India and started his own law practice.
